1477385 Ignition devices G HARTIG 7 June 1974 [27 July 1973] 25313/74 Heading F1B An ignition device for generating ignition pulses across a spark discharge gap 9 in an internal combustion engine comprises a circuit having a first electrical energy store 5 of a capacitive character connected to the spark discharge gap and a second electrical energy store 2 of an inductive character also connected to the spark discharge gap a single switching device 1 via which the circuit containing both energy stores is connectible to an electrical energy source (not shown) the switching device having a first state in which it connects the circuit to the energy source and a second state in which it disconnects the circuit from the energy source and a control device 6 for controlling discharge of the energy stores in such a way that simultaneous or sequential discharge of the energy stores takes place once the switching device has assumed the second state. As shown the control device 6 is connected to a thyristor 7. In a modification the control device 6 is replaced by a Zener diode connected between the secondary winding 4 and the gate of the thyristor. In another modification the control device and thyristor are replaced by a diac connected between the capacitor 5 and the winding 16 of a transformer 8. In other modifications the transformer has two secondary windings supplying energy to the spark discharge gap 9. Further modifications are described including an arrangement comprising two spark discharge gaps and associated transformers.

The disadvantage of these methods and systems for producing burning pulses is the ignition instability, since the charge of the sources of discharge depends on the frequency of rotation of the engine shaft. The purpose of the invention is to stabilize an igniting spark by eliminating frequency-dependent decelerations of charge sources of a discharge. The goal is achieved in the method by the fact that both energy sources are charged independently of one another by means of a common switching device. In the system for producing ignition pulses, the goal is achieved by the fact that a capacitive energy source is connected directly to the charging winding of the charging transformer, and an inductive energy source is connected to the spark gap directly or through an ignition transformer.
